My Grandfather's Ghost, Abstract Painting

A pen gently traces through the memories of one's Grandfather, to follow steps of recollection into a city full of memories adventures loves and longings - All while colors cascade for one brief glimpse of a moment in time, where an ancestor walked through the city street...

A painting of my grandfather on one of his walks

"...it was the most selfless thing about him..."

My grandfather on my dad's side is known and remembered for countless things, like owning one of the first radio stations in San Antonio in the early 1900's, being a city councilman who was asked to greet presidenital candidates in the '60's, and of course loving and caring for his family.

But the one thing I continue to feel understated in his countless examples of goodness and selflessness, was that he walked everywhere. He might have owned a car, but nobody can recall. What everyone who knows him remembers clearly, however, was that nothing made him happier than to stroll all over the city, with his hat and maybe an umbrella.

The Art Supplies I used for My Grandfather's Ghost

I used micron pens to do my one-line-drawing of My Grandfather's Ghost, first. That took a few sketches to try and capture his likeness and the overall western-gothic feeling of downtown San Antonio. Then I used my Windsor Newton watercolors to finish the middle-colors of this painting, setting all the emotional moments that a life of 97 years can have within it. For the details I used my Gelly-Roll gel pens for the little perks you get to see walking down a city sidewalk.
